Hanson Lecture, by Sir Alan Massey, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Presentation of Log Competition Awards

Hanson Lecture & Log Competition Awards Presentation

Don't miss our much anticipated final talk of the season, the Hanson Lecture by Sir Alan Massey, this Wednesday 28th March. There are still some spaces left, so don’t miss the opportunity to hear this excellent speaker.

Overview

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency's (MCA) motto is ‘safer lives, safer ships and cleaner seas’. Most people know the Coastguard’s role in co-ordinating search and rescue, but the MCA has a wide range of safety and environmental responsibilities, and represents the UK internationally at the IMO. Sir Alan took over as Chief Executive following a distinguished career in the Royal Navy, during which he commanded four warships, including the aircraft carriers HMS ILLUSTRIOUS and HMS ARK ROYAL, seeing action against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan in 2001-2, and in the amphibious assault into Iraq in 2003. He later led the Operations Division of the UK's Permanent Joint Headquarters at Northwood, went on to be Assistant Chief of Naval Staff in London and finally served as Second Sea Lord and Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command.   He is particularly proud to have served as Commodore of the Royal Naval Sailing Association from 2008-2010.

Following the talk, prizes will be awarded to this year’s Log Competition winners, judged by Rod Heikell, who will be in attendance.
