Blue Water Spring Seminar

The annual Blue Water Seminar includes two informative talks and the opportunity to meet fellow blue water sailors, share ideas, plans and tales of adventures.

There will be time for a Q&A session at the end of each presentation.

Programme:

10:00 Registration with coffee, tea & biscuits

10:30 First Aid and Medical Concerns for Blue Water Sailors, presentation by Sue Johnson

Sue will be covering Medical Kits and the importance of Crew Profiling. Management of Fractures : Bleeding / Wound Types : Burns : Head Injuries : Choking. Identification of serious illnesses : Appendicitis : Pneumonia : Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) and the identification of other ‘red flag’ signs and symptoms. This will be accompanied with the practical audience partition side of things e.g. splinting, bandaging, dressings, using stethoscopes etc.

Sue is a Registered General Nurse, Midwife, Health Visitor : Certified in Accident & Emergency Care : Registered Instructor for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. She has sailed independently, on rallies and flotillas for many years, both in the UK and abroad. Sue has also worked with ARC participants, Clipper Round the World, Carnival Cruises and the Armed Forces.

14:00 Living the Dream, talk by Bob & Elaine Hazell

Having left the U.K. in 2008 and sailing from Grenada in 2010 Bob & Elaine completed their circumnavigation in 2016. Living the Dream, covers the yacht, planning and provisioning, the weather, communications and maintenance. Then on to Shelter Bay in Panama, the Panama Canal, Galapagos, Marquesas, Tuamotos, Society Islands, Suwarrow (only accessible to sailing yachts), Western Samoa, Tonga and the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. This voyage gave them the best sailing that they had ever experienced.

Bob and Elaine use their talks to raise money for The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and would appreciate a small donation from those attending – envelopes will be provided.
