Charting the Uncharted in the UK’s Yachting Paradise

Charting the Uncharted in the UK’s Yachting Paradise, by Bob Bradfield

The channels and anchorages of the West Coast of Scotland offer some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the UK. Many have not been resurveyed since the advent of satellite positioning, or even since the days of lead and line, so many of the published charts are not of sufficiently large scale to be of use close-in. Yachtsmen have been dependent on 'keeping a cable off, steering 035 degrees for the white cottage and then lining up the red phone box with the dry stone wall on the hillside'.

Now there is an alternative! Bob Bradfield has set about creating a series of very large scale electronic charts – 130 so far – which can run seamlessly with UKHO charts on PCs, Macs, iPads and smartphones. Bob will explain his project and show the delightful spots you can reach with them in what he calls the UK’s yachting paradise.
