Pioneer ashore for a scrubClothing a Skillinger Crew in 1880, Jane Robinson

Coffee 1100, talk 1130, bar open 1230, lunch available 1300

When Jane and her WEA friends in Brightlingsea became involved in the restoration and operation of the fishing Skillinger Pioneer they realised that although there was much information available on the ship and the “hardest trade on the coast”, very little was known about what the crew of fishermen actually wore. So they set about researching the subject and recreating the clothing the men used day-to day.

We enjoyed a brief introduction to the subject when we visited the Pioneer Trust with Essex Section in 2014 and were so fascinated that we have invited Jane to Suffolk to tell us more and show us the garments they have made.
