Your First Channel Crossing – a CA Channel Section Seminar

For many skippers a first crossing of the English Channel is a big step in their cruising accomplishments – one undertaken with some trepidation.

In a seminar organised by the Cruising Association’s Channel Section you will hear why you would want to take your boat to France or the Channel Islands, when are the best times to go, which port you might choose for your arrival, what preparation you should undertake, how to actually undertake the passage and your arrival, and then some tips for cruising the coast. 

We will address many of the concerns we have heard from sailors about a first passage such as the length of the passage, being out of sight of land, avoiding big ships, entering ports with restricted access, unfamiliarity with foreign marinas, understanding international entry/exit processes, and not speaking the language.

We won’t be setting out all of what you should do, because we are all different, but we will provide a wealth of information and experience so identifying the things you should consider so you can make the best decisions and, ultimately, ensure you and your crew have a smooth passage and enjoy the rewards crossing the Channel can provide.

The attractions of crossing the Channel

It's not just about visiting France for the attractive coastline, interesting ports, fascinating history, tourist attractions and culinary delights. It is also about extending your horizons with further expertise and experience, improving your confidence for new challenges and setting you up for cruising not just to France but also beyond.

Cross-border paperwork and processes

Sailing outside of UK waters requires further knowledge of British, international, and in particular, French regulations and processes including aspects such as required documents, checking out and checking in (of UK and France).

Cross-Channel destinations

Choosing your destination may depend on when you wish to travel, climate & weather, other events you may wish to participate in or avoid, port access or facilities, tourist attractions, distance from your home port, and even the arrival processes and for onward travel. 

Boat preparation & equipment

Your boat must also conform to international and maybe French regulations; and there are many checks, additions and considerations you may wish to undertake or add before extending your cruising range.

Planning & undertaking your crossing

There are many factors to consider and build into your passage planning for a cross-Channel trip. Then important actions to be undertaken while you enjoy that passage to ensure it is comfortable and enjoyable. 

Cruising France

French marinas, culture, shops & restaurants are all a little different. Understanding these in advance can ensure you have no surprises and to enjoy your visit to its maximum.

Each year the CA organises a Cross-Channel rally which is an ideal introduction for first time Channel crossers.
