The Riddle that was Erskine Childers

Hear the fascinating story of the sailor and spy, Erskine Childers, author of The Riddle in the Sands.

Maritime historian Cathy Shelbourne and writer Erskine Childers share a common ancestorIn this talk, Cathy unravels the Childers family tree and traces Erskine’s career. The Riddle of the Sands, set in the shifting sands of the German Frisian Islands before the outbreak of the First World War and which influenced Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty into strengthening the Home Fleet of the Royal Navy.

Open to: Members of the CA, CS and RHYC and to non-members.

Guests: Members are encouraged to bring one guest each at the member's rate, just book your guest as an additional member when booking your place.

Non-Members: Additional guests of members, and also non-members, are welcome to attend at the non-member's rate.
