For December, our CAptain’s Mate feature takes us to Klang, Malaysia, a fascinating stop for those seeking a quiet location after navigating one of the region’s busiest shipping approaches. CA member Kate Walker visited this wildlife-filled anchorage and shares her insights.
The approach to Klang is dominated by commercial traffic along the north-south shipping lane, so vigilance is essential. Once you leave the main channel, however, the waterways quickly become calm and peaceful.
Kate notes that depths remain generous, saying, "Coming off the main shipping channel we never saw less than 8m at half-tide, until our anchor point where things started to shallow up. We anchored in 4.5m the junction of Selat Mahan/Meriam and Selat Che Mat Zin."
The holding is excellent, the water flat and tidal movements gentle, offering great shelter for an overnight stop. While there are no facilities, the anchorage rewards visitors with tranquil surroundings and abundant wildlife. Kate spotted storks, sea eagles and herons.
For those preferring a marina berth, the Royal Selangor Yacht Club is nearby, but advance booking is essential. As Kate reports, "It needs to be booked ahead and we hadn’t!"
Charts indicate several fish farms in the area, one remains just north of the anchorage, while others have relocated. Navigation is straightforward, allowing you to enjoy the calm waters and natural beauty.
Whether you are seeking a quiet anchorage or planning a short stop before exploring the region further, Klang offers a memorable and safe haven.
If you are heading to Malaysia, other locations featured on CAptain’s Mate include Port Dickson, Pulau Besar, Puteri Pinetree Marina, Pulau Pisang and Batu Pahat.
