The Department for Transport (DfT) has a stated goal for "…UK domestic maritime to aim for zero fuel lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, with at least a 30% reduction by 2030 and an 80% reduction by 2040, relative to 2008 levels." It has launched a Call for Evidence (CfE) which consists of up to 122 wide-ranging questions for completion by any interested parties such as vessel builders, operators, representative organisations or individuals. The CfE covers all vessels with a gross tonnage of less than 400 tonnes.
RATS, on behalf of the CA, is working with the RYA, British Marine and the Inland Waterways Association to develop a co-ordinated response whilst still maintaining each organisation’s independence.
The CfE closes at 23:59 on 25 July. RATS will be making a comprehensive response that builds on our work investigating Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil and Alternative Propulsion (member only page). This is not a simple survey and is creating a lot of discussion and debate within RATS to ensure we get critical points across and are seen to be broadly supportive of the strategy whilst pointing out the issues surrounding cost, practicality and, above all, safety.
It is clear that decarbonising all the boats CA members currently use by 2050 is going to be challenging given the longevity of the vessels and their propulsion systems. We are working on that difficult balancing act in the interests of all our members and future members.
Members who feel strongly about this issue can take part as individuals, but be warned, this is not a tick-box survey (122 questions!) as detailed information is being sought. The links are below:
