Vacancy: Editor – Cruising Association Publications

The Cruising Association (CA) is seeking an experienced and self-motivated Editor to lead the production of its member publications across print and digital channels. This is a varied and hands-on role, combining editorial leadership, content commissioning, and end-to-end publication management. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality publications that inform, engage, and inspire our boating community.

Key Responsibilities

You will take ownership of producing:

  • Cruising Magazine (quarterly) – a 100-page, full-colour print publication with advertising
  • Digital editions of Cruising (quarterly)
  • Member Newsletter (monthly) – HTML email linking to website content
  • Bite-sized Cruising (quarterly) – shortened PDF edition for prospective members
  • Prospect Update (monthly) – simplified newsletter for non-members

You may also contribute to:

  • Annual Yearbook – a comprehensive 116-page publication distributed annually

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Writing and editing editorial content (features, intros, captions, news items)
  • Copy editing for clarity, accuracy, and consistency of tone
  • Designing and laying out publications using InDesign and digital tools
  • Managing production processes for both print and online outputs
  • Commissioning and coordinating content from contributors
  • Sourcing and managing images, including from libraries and open licences
  • Ensuring all publications meet deadlines and quality standards

Skills & Experience

We’re looking for someone who brings:

  • Strong editorial and writing skills
  • Excellent copy editing and proofreading ability
  • Experience in publication design and layout (e.g. InDesign)
  • Basic image editing and PDF production skills
  • Proven experience delivering print and digital publications at a senior level
  • Confidence working independently and managing multiple deadlines
  • Strong communication skills, particularly when working with volunteers
  • Competence with tools such as Word, Adobe Creative Suite (or equivalents), and digital publishing platforms

Knowledge & Background

  • Good understanding of design principles and clear communication
  • Familiarity with digital publishing and email newsletter tools
  • Broad knowledge of leisure boating and cruising (sail or motor)
  • Enthusiasm for the subject matter and community
  • Membership of the Cruising Association (or willingness to join) is highly desirable

Working Relationships

You will collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders, including:

  • CA leadership, editorial board, and council
  • Volunteers and member contributors
  • Internal staff (marketing, web, PR, IT, and operations)
  • External partners such as printers, advertisers, and marine suppliers

Time Commitment

  • Cruising Magazine: 25–30 days per issue (quarterly)
  • Newsletters & updates: 2–3 days per issue (monthly)
  • Yearbook (if applicable): 7–10 days annually

This equates to approximately half a full-time workload across the year.

Working Arrangements

  • Fully remote, with flexible working patterns
  • Access to suitable equipment (dual monitors recommended for print production)
  • Attendance at virtual meetings as required
  • Occasional in-person attendance at CA events is encouraged

Fee & Expenses

  • Annual fee: approximately £45,000
  • Equivalent to roughly £300 per working day
  • Editor is currently responsible for software and operating costs (e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud, Office 365), though this may be reviewed

Location: Flexible (remote)
Contract: Freelance / Part-time (approx. 50% FTE)
Fee: Circa £45,000 per year
