Weather and Weather Apps

Details

Ever wondered how confident you can be in the forecasting on your weather app?

Or even which app you trust the most?

Weather app

Larry Botheras, Principal of the West Mersea Yacht Club Training School, will give us an introduction to understanding how weather models work and the apps available. By the end of the talk you will be better able to arrive at your own weather conclusions, whatever type of sailing you do.

Larry started sailing in 1966, initially dinghy racing until his knees gave up when he got his first cruiser in 2003.  Since then he's been actively involved in both sailing and training (shore-based cruising instructor and VHF assessor).

He says he was never very satisfied with the RYA Weather syllabus and when invited on a course for instructors he jumped at the chance.  The instructor was Simon Rowell, who is now the UK Sailing Team forecaster and has delivered weather routing and advice to the Clipper Race. This was an epiphany for Larry and he likes to pass the knowledge on to other sailors.

He also recently joined the Royal Institute of Navigation to keep track of the rapid developments happening in small craft electronic navigation.
