Get Involved

Reducing the risks posed by poorly marked static fishing gear depends on collective action from everyone who uses the sea. Whether you are reporting incidents, sharing experiences, promoting awareness, or supporting safer navigation, your contribution helps build a clearer picture of the problem and drives the case for change. The actions below set out simple but important ways sailors, organisations, and the wider boating community can make a difference.

Report Incidents

Recording static fishing gear incidents and mapping high-risk areas will help illustrate the extent of the problem to the relevant government agencies

The RYA and the Cruising Association ask sailors to report entanglements and sightings of poorly marked static gear. Reports can be submitted quickly and easily through the RYA Fishing Gear Reporting Form.

Share Your Experience

Photos, stories, and firsthand accounts are vital in raising awareness and driving change. If you have encountered poorly marked fishing gear or experienced an entanglement, we would like to hear from you.

If you have photographs of poorly marked gear, or entanglements that the Cruising Association can use as evidence, please email lobsterpots@theca.org.uk.

Reach Out

Support from influential voices can help drive real change. If you know a well-known figure in the boating world who may be willing to endorse the campaign, please consider introducing us.

We will also need support at a policy level. If you know a Member of Parliament with an interest in leisure boating or maritime safety, we would value an introduction.

If you can help in either way, please email lobsterpots@theca.org.uk

Safe navigation starts with awareness and preparation

  • Maintain a vigilant lookout, particularly in zones known for heavy potting activity
  • Reduce speed where conditions or risk levels require it
  • Where possible, avoid known high-density fishing zones when possible
  • Read the Cruising Association Entanglement Advice

Engage Constructively

Please support positive dialogue between recreational and commercial sea users.

Organisations

The Cruising Association invites organisations across the marine sector to partner with us in strengthening this campaign. By sharing campaign materials and helping to amplify key messages, you can play a vital role in improving awareness and driving safer practices.

If you would like to get involved, please contact the Cruising Association by email.
