Since the joint RYA and Cruising Association call for evidence launched on 30 September, boaters have continued to submit valuable reports on fishing-gear hazards around the UK coast and its immediate waters.
As at 15 December 2025, 21 entanglements experienced and 2 entanglements witnessed have been reported through the RYA’s Fishing Gear Reporting Form (since 30 September). These reports are starting to provide a picture of how often small craft are being impacted.
In addition, boaters have submitted 12 sightings of unmarked or poorly marked static fishing gear, including lost or abandoned gear. These sightings are critical in helping identify high-risk areas where navigation and safety are compromised.
The growing dataset is strengthening the evidence base needed to progress discussions to improve marking standards and safer practices.
Boaters who have experienced or witnessed an entanglement, or who have spotted unmarked gear, are encouraged to continue submitting information via the RYA’s Fishing Gear Reporting Form. The form asks for location, date, time, weather conditions and type of fishing gear. It also allows for photo uploads. This data will be used to identify high-risk areas and to inform further discussions.
The more data collected, the stronger the case for change to reduce entanglement risks. Find out more at www.theca.org.uk/news/fishing-gear-entanglements.
