In October 2024, CA members Annie Varvill and Chris Boutwood visited Port Yasmine Hammamet to assess its suitability as a potential winter base for their Dufour 412.
Situated on the southeastern tip of Cap Bon, just one hour from Tunis Airport, this modern marina made a strong impression, and Annie has shared a detailed report on CAptain's Mate.
Arrival
"Easy approach and good depths into marina which is modern, sheltered, quiet and well maintained," reports Annie.
The very smart Capitanerie is open 24/7 and responds efficiently to calls on Channel 9. "They will send assistance in an inflatable to guide you in and help moor stern-to with lazy lines."
As a Port of Entry, it has onsite authorities. There’s a fuel quay and security is good, with fob entry to the pontoons. The Capitanerie staff are helpful and speak good English and French.
Marina Facilities
The wash and shower facilities are reasonable, though "quite a walk from the pontoon," Annie notes. "Take your own loo paper and soap as everywhere in Tunisia - it's not provided."
Electricity and water is on the pontoons. Laundry is close by, and there are several supermarkets and restaurants near to the marina, with Annie’s top eatery being 'Malik's'. There is more choice in the town of Hammamet, accessible by frequent buses or taxi.
Community
Annie reports there is a great, supportive community of winter visitors and liveaboards, with social events and much sharing of information about Tunisia, taxis, boat jobs and more. Annie’s report also gives tips on local sources of information and recommendations on marine services, canvas work and winter storage.
CA members can tap into the knowledge and support provided by our Honorary Local Representative in Tunisia too.
Why choose Tunisia?
As an overview of cruising in Tunisia, Annie concludes, "Tunisia is great and interesting for living aboard, storage, work, etc and lovely and cheap. Everyone there seems to use it as a jumping off point for Malta, Sardinia, Sicily and other places."
For shoreside discovery, Annie adds, "Anyone visiting Tunisia, don’t miss the jaw-dropping sites of el Jem (and its museum a mile or so in a taxi from the main amphitheatre), ancient Carthage and the Bardo Museum. All are easy to reach by a day trip in a taxi. Unmissable!"
