Liz and her husband Tim are well known by many as long serving, now retired, Solent Section Secretaries. What is less known is Liz’s involvement in saving and preserving the glorious Basingstoke Canal for the nation.

This extraordinary story began on 1st March 1949 when Joan Marshall, Liz’s mother, bought the Canal in an auction, and it changed the course of her family’s life. The challenges faced in restoring the waterway included outright dereliction, bombed locks, breached banks, landslips and hundreds of tons of rubbish. The initial fight culminated in the Grand Reopening to navigation by the Duke of Kent in 1991. However, the struggle to save the Canal still goes on. Never let it close!
