Charting the Uncharted in the UK’s Yachting Paradise, Bob Bradfield

The lochs, channels and anchorages of the West Coast of Scotland offer some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the UK. Many have not been resurveyed since the advent of satellite positioning, or even since the days of lead and line, and the official charts tend not of sufficiently large scale to be of use close-in. Yachtsmen have been dependent on guidance from pilot books, for example: 'keep a cable off, steer 035 degrees for the white cottage and then line up the red phone box with the dry stone wall on the hillside'. Now there is an alternative! Bob Bradfield has created a series of very large scale electronic charts – more than 150 so far – which can run seamlessly with UKHO charts on PCs, Macs, iPads and smartphones. Bob will explain his project and show slides of some of the delightful spots you can reach with his charts in what he calls the ‘UK’s yachting paradise’.
