Going North to Svalbard with Des Crampton

Hear how the Ramsgate-based yacht 'Cantilena of London' undertook a 4,500 mile round trip into northern Arctic waters. Des and his crew sailed to a latitude of 78.5 degrees north amongst the inhospitable but spectacular islands of the Svalbard archipelago. Des was joined by his wife Teresa in Tromsø for the homeward cruise. Intricate navigation, weird weather and the awesome beauty of the Norwegian coastline all contributed to making this a memorable journey.

In the talk I plan to cover:

  • Introduction to both me and Cantilena

  • Why Svalbard? Information about the archipelago

  • Planning and preparation

  • Leg 1. Ramsgate to Bodo

  • Leg 2. Bodo to Svalbard and back to Tromso

  • Leg 3. Tromso to Ramsgate

Bar: 19.15

Talk: 20.00

Ticket price: £3 for CA & UTSC members and £5 for guests. All very welcome.
