Tides: what the cruising sailor needs to know, by Penny Haire

Our annual joint event with the Royal Institute of Navigation will be by webinar as our speaker is in Australia, but we will be broadcasting from CA House. Come and join us for a social evening: there will be no charge.

Penny’s talk will cover the fundamental causes of tides, understanding harmonic constituents, how tidal models work, and the future of tidal prediction and forecasting.

Penny has had a 35 year career in the maritime industry as an Ocean Youth Trust Skipper, RYA Instructor, and Examiner before becoming RYA Chief Cruising Instructor responsible for all shore-based and practical training within the Yachtmaster Scheme. Penny moved to Australia in 2004, to oversee the implementation of the RYA Cruising Scheme in the Asia Pacific region, before founding Tidetech in 2008 with Roger Proctor, an internationally recognised coastal oceanographer. Tidetech now produces models of tides and currents and supplies oceanographic data for a wide range of users including commercial shipping, Americas Cup and Olympic Teams and recreational sailors. She has always had a fascination with tides, having grown up near Liverpool where the tidal range is 12m.

This lecture will be delivered by Penny via Zoom but you can still attend CA House to watch the lecture there.

There will be no charge for viewing at CA House (if you are using the bar) or remotely via Zoom.
