When a Sailing Boat is a Vessel for Something Magical

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity that takes young people aged 8-24 on sailing and outdoor adventures to inspire them to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer. Every day around 12 young people under 25 are diagnosed with cancer. For many young people simply picking up where they left off before their diagnosis just isn’t possible. That is why when treatment ends the Trust’s work begins.

Whether it comes from being away from home, meeting others who ‘get it’ and understand how they feel, standing at the helm and pulling sails on a boat, exploring natural wonders through mountain walks, or just feeling able to have fun again, young people – regardless of their age – can start to make sense of the world and their place in it after the devastation of cancer.

“Cancer made me feel like I was a jigsaw puzzle; everyone was pieced together, and I was the missing piece that couldn't fit. You realise you're not the odd one out. It's magical.”
Olivia, 15

Our speaker is Peter, a valued Trust volunteer who will share his first-hand experience of seeing the transformational difference the Trust has on the mental health of young people like Olivia. This will be an inspiring talk about how a sailing boat can be a vessel for something truly magical.
