WELCOME BACK

Welcome back from where ever you have been cruising. I hope that you were able to enjoy the wonderful weather in May and June. This is written onboard in mid August. It is cold, windy and the forecast is for thundery rain. Perhaps it will be better tomorrow. (It wasn’t – Force 7).

No recent news of Colin and Elspeth and “Scarba”, last encountered motoring through the Swin Spitway on her way for a short break in London before heading off for the Baltic.

David and Valerie in “Spirit of Rosinis” were able to benefit from the spring weather by leaving Woolverstone straight after the Spring Rally, cruising down Channel to Poole and crossing to the Channel Isles and the lovely Ile de Bréhat in North Brittany. All these areas were quiet in May and June and into July, with more Dutch and Belgian yachts in harbour than British. We found that prices in France were markedly higher when compared with our last visit six years ago. Not only the effect of the weak pound, but also from an apparent ‘sting the visitors’ policy at the French marinas. Mooring charges in Alderney, Beaulieu and Newtown on the Isle of Wight were all less than those for a buoy off Lézardrieux. In the Solent we benefited from our ‘free MDL nights’ and ‘Seven for the price of Five’ at Premier’s Brighton and Sovereign marinas. Back on our home mooring today, but with a couple more weeks to look forward to, including the annual ‘Lads’ Cruise’ with work colleagues from 30 years ago. NEW MEMBERS

You may have seen her at her mooring in the entrance to Pyefleet, or out sailing in local waters. David Tourney of the Pioneer Trust will tell the story of “Pioneer’s” miraculous rescue from the West Mersea saltings, rebuilding in an Essex barn and present working life. Come prepared to make a donation to support the preservation of this lovely vessel and the very worthwhile role she now plays in the community.

Friday 22 October 2010 Travels with Tilman Bob Comlay

A highly decorated military leader, Bill Tilman's climbing and sailing achievements rank amongst the greatest in the fields of twentieth century mountaineering and deep sea cruising and his books remain essential reading for many who embark on similar ventures. They cover a series of high latitude voyages in traditional Bristol Channel pilot cutters.“No Pay, No Prospects, not much Pleasure”. This was how Bill Tilman advertised in The Times for crew on his voyages. Bob Comley was one of the few who were recruited by this method, and returned for a second voyage. He has taken a special interest in the life and exploits of this famous yachtsman, explorer and mountaineer.

NOTICES TO MARINERS

Most NMs over the summer were about the Power Boat Championships in Dovercourt Bay, now thankfully over. Commiserations if you were trying to get into the Walton Backwaters, or cross the Thames Estuary on 31 July or 1 August. I thought that we were all supposed to be ever so green these days. Whatever were they doing allowing 100 knot power boats to career about the seas?  Glad we were miles away. We have received a number of NMs from ABP regarding Ipswich and the River Orwell and HHA regarding Harwich Port. None of particular importance now due to the passage of time, other than the establishment of a Water-ski area and information on further dredging activity:
