NORTHERN SPAIN

The day of talks and discussions starts with an account of how one family decided Northern Spain was the ideal cruising destination.  Roger Bickerstaff  explains how to reach the Spanish coast with least effort and recounts his remarkable achievement of Spain and back in one, less than ideal, season.

 SPANISH RIAS TO FARO

The Spanish Rias are one of the gems of Northern Spain, indeed Europe.   Talk to those who have visited these stunning inlets and they’ll try to put you off going. “Oh no, you don’t want to go there’, “Better give them a miss if I were you”, “So much better to cruise past and head for the Med.”  Are comments typical of the advice you’ll receive.

But don’t be mislead. The reason you are being advised to skip the Rias is not because they represent a problem, or are difficult, or dangerous,  or unwelcoming. Far from it. The truth is those who know the Rias want to keep these gems to themselves. Andy Miller however breaks ranks and reveals just how attractive and unspoilt these sailing havens are. After you’ve visited what some regards as the greatest sailing destinations in Europe you too might want to keep them a secret.

However, sooner or later you’ll have to leave, and Andy tells of his trip south to Faro.

 GETTING HOME AGAIN

All too frequently ‘pilots’ explain how to get somewhere but ignore the fact you’ve got to get home again. Cathy and Richard Brown sailed to the Spanish Rias and in this talk explain how they returned ‘uphill’ to the UK.
