Ian Galletti [joint secretary] has organised some interesting Winter Warmers to get us under way again in October starting with:

Thursday, 10th October 2013 - Disasters created and avoided with Roger Shaw

Roger is Commodore of Henley Offshore Group. He has sailed 23,000 miles in the Baltic, South Coast, USA and recently completed a 3 year cruise from Plymouth to Corfu. He will talk about “Lessons learnt or disasters I just avoided !”. His topics will cover the notion of being a “Nanny Skipper”, avoiding pirates off Lanzarotte, putting diesel in the holding tank for 8 weeks, finding and killing a rat on board. Also how to keep the crew [and wife] happy and some perils of chartering.

Thursday, 14th November 2013 – Shipwreck, Small Boats, High Latitudes with Roger Taylor

In this talk illustrated with superb slides and some extraordinary video sequences, Roger tells how shipwreck on a square-rigger lead him to a lifetime of small-boat single handed ocean sailing. Roger has sailed 19’ and 20’ engineless yachts from the Roaring Forties to the Artic Circle. In 2011 he sailed to 800 North.

Thursday, 12th December 2013 – Prince Henry the Navigator – Portugals Pioneer of Maritime Exploration with Graham Anthony

Henry’s shipwrights innovated, his scholars improved celestial navigation, and his seaman mastered the winds and ocean currents. Freed from the control of Islam, ~Portugal was then able to trade in the Spice Islands, cross the Atlantic, and expand Christendom.
