After Dinner Speaker, Paul Rodhouse: "When John Franklin’s expedition in search of the northwest passage failed to return, and could not be found by public funded expeditions, Franklin’s widow commissioned the steam yacht ‘Fox’ for a private expedition in 1857. The ‘Fox’ was under the command of Captain Mclintock and sailed wearing the RHYC colours. The expedition found the first evidence of the fate of HM Ships Erebus and Terror. Later RHYC was involved in Captain Nares’ expedition to the Arctic in the 1880s and Prince Luigi di Savoia’s Arctic expedition in 1898. In 1901 Scott’s Discovery wore the ensign of the RHYC on his first Antarctic expedition and in 1949 honorary member of the RHYC Gordon Robin joined the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic expedition. With a glance astern at this history the club recently made the captains of the UK’s new polar research vessel, the Sir David Attenborough, honorary members."
