The Jester Challenge, George Arnison

Some say they represent the true Corinthian spirit of sailing others think they are crazy, but the Jester Challenge truly provides challenges to all who participate. Named after Blondie Haslar’s boat which he sailed in the first Observer Single Handed Transatlantic Rally (OSTAR), Jester Challenges now exist on the original transatlantic route plus events to the Azores and Baltimore, Ireland. They are low budget and minimally regulated events for single handed sailors in small boats, typically less than 30’.

George Arnison is a self-taught, wooden boat enthusiast and coastal sailor who dabbles with offshore, single-handed sailing in his 30’ wooden sloop 'Good Report'. Together they successfully participated in the Jester Challenges to Baltimore in 2019 and 2023, and to the Azores in 2021. During the latter, George helped rescue a fellow participant - for which they were jointly awarded the Ocean Cruising Club’s Seamanship Award 2021.

George will talk about the Jester Challenge in general, his participation in the 2021 Jester Azores Challenge and that rescue.
