Another visit to Tower Bridge and Trinity House

The Tower Bridge and Trinity House day proved very popular, so a repeat event is now planned.  THIS IS NOW FULLY BOOKED.

This involves a tour of Tower Bridge and its workings with our own guide. Travelling the walkways with the new glass floor and the Edwardian Engine Room. This will be followed by a pub lunch in the Minories.

Tower Bridge was started in 1886 and took 8 years to build and was officially opened on 30th June 1984. In total the project took some 18 years, with the first 8 years spent on the design. When it was built, Tower Bridge was the largest and most sophisticated bascule bridge ever completed. The bascules were operated by hydraulics, using steam to power the enormous pumping engines. In the first year of operation the bascules of the bridge were raised 6,160 times and witnessed the daily crossing of 8,000 horse-drawn vehicles and 60,000 pedestrians.

Our day finishes with a tour of Trinity House at Tower Hill which is both a wonderful building to see and explore. Trinity House has been serving the mariner ever since Henry Vlll granted it a Royal Charter on 20th May, 1514.

The day is expected to cost £18.55 each plus the pub lunch (our previous lunch cost most members around £10.00 each). The Tower Bridge tour starts at 1100 and I suggest that we all meet at 1045. Trinity House 1530.

Date: Monday 14th May 2018

Time: 1045 meet at Tower Bridge. Tower Bridge tour begins at 1100, Trinity House 1530.
