Biscay

Following the revised advice issued by the Government on 16 March this event has been cancelled.

A Biscay Crossing should always be given respect and careful planning. For many of us, it will be our first passage lasting more than 25 hours and for some as long as three days. What are the best port of departure and arrival? How do we make the best use of weather information and how will that influence the proposed route. What about looking after the crew, watch-keeping? What are the limits of your comfort zone?

The western coast of France offers a delightful cruising ground and abounds with wonderful destinations including stunning islands, historic towns, sheltered anchorages, unspoilt rivers and an array of good harbours and marinas.

Passage-making from the UK to the Mediterranean, or crossing the Atlantic, usually means crossing the Bay of Biscay. This is where the adventure begins. There are tales of heroic undertakings while others manage to find kinder and more enjoyable conditions. We cannot guarantee that every crossing will be benign, but there are now more sources of information that may help to find a better weather slot.

The Atlantic coast of France offers a superb cruising ground, delightful islands, historic towns that welcome boaters, sheltered anchorages and unspoilt rivers.

The day will include presentations on channel crossings, keeping a boat in France as well as  cruising areas. The cost of attendance includes lunch, refreshments and a comprehensive information pack.

For many of us, crossing the Bay of Biscay is the first extended (longer than 24 hours) passage that we make and it is not one to be undertaken lightly. Where the sea is concerned, there are no guarantees.  Careful preparation can improve the odds in one's favour.

10.00 – 11.00 Registration Tea and coffee will be available

11.00 – 11.45 Welcome followed by Insurance by Robert Stevens. Robert will consider and explain the essential arrangements required for full cover.
