Cruise of the Naromis in the Baltic in August 1939

Were the young sailors on this journey spies or just holidaymakers in German waters? Julia Jones will explain, using the recently discovered diaries & photos of her father, George Jones, the skipper on this cruise.

The cruise was, on the surface, by four young men, together with a more experienced skipper, who travelled 1300 miles in three weeks: a formidable cruise even in Naromis, a 37’ motor sailer with powerful engines.

The fourth annual Open Weekend at Shotley Point Yacht Club, Ipswich, takes place May 25-26th and this year is being held in conjunction with the "Push the Boat Out" campaign to encourage visitors to try big boat sailing.

Organisers are making every effort to make the weekend family-friendly and a fun day out for everyone, as well as appealing to the out and out boating enthusiast.

Nick Chavasse learned to sail on the Norfolk Broads aged six, and grew up sailing Wayfarers. He has been cruising for over 30 years in various cruising grounds around Western Europe but says that he always finds himself back in Brittany.

Supper £14. Price includes attendance at the talk. There is a charge of £5 per head for members attending for talks only.
