CAptain’s Mate of the Month – Tayvallich, Scotland

For November’s CAptain’s Mate of the Month, we head to Scotland with CA member Alan Kohler, who has cruised extensively around the Scottish coastline, including a stopover in the popular spot of Tayvallich this summer.

Tayvallich is a small village in the Knapdale area of Argyll and Bute, with the well sheltered bay at the head of Loch Sween offering pontoon, mooring buoy and anchorage options.

Alan shares his experience, saying
"Lovely sheltered bay. The pontoon has clearly been upgraded recently, with new pontoon decking etc. Avoid berthing on the end of the long arm as used for Jura ferry, but one boat can berth in front of this. Three fingers on the North side, one reserved for two boats of over 10m and two shorter fingers.

"As other have said, also 4 blue visitor moorings, but scattered amongst lots of other private moorings - one immediately inside the entrance, one to starboard, one hidden well to port, and one 20m SE of the pontoons. Payment by honesty box or bank transfer.

"Water but no electric working on the pontoons when we were there. Plenty of space for landing dinghies.

"Good village information board, done by local primary school children, at the shore end of the pontoon (by honesty box). Public toilets a fair walk to the south end of the village.

"Apparently showers available by the shop, when café is closed but needs booking when café open.

"Enjoyed the walk round Tayanish peninsula, but needs proper footgear for steep paths (and long trousers and sleeves for thick bracken) if walk up to the 126m summit.”

There are several other member reports on Tayvallich, also sharing information on mooring, local restaurants and amenities.

The Honorary Local Representative (HLR) for the area can also be found via CAptain’s Mate.
