For April’s CAptain’s Mate of the Month, we are heading to the popular Baltic cruising waters and dropping in on Sassnitz, Germany.
Located on the northeast of the island of Rügen, Germany’s largest island, Sassnitz offers a mix of charming old town, stunning nature and plenty of facilities. Shelter in the harbour is good, with a choice of pontoon and quay moorings.
Sassnitz is Germany’s third largest Baltic Sea port and provides all the usual necessities, including pump out and chandlery, and nearby amenities such as supermarkets and hospital. CA Members can also tap into the expertise of our Honorary Local Representative.
CA member Robin Matthews visited last summer and shares his experience, saying, "We stayed here for a few days in June 2022, and found it quite pleasant. Vast harbour still used for fishing, tourist trips, and the marina.
"Pontoons are designated by boat length, and have box berths which are quite wide. There are some alongside berths on eastern sea wall, but they are a long walk to facilities and town. Toilets and showers are next to the HM's office and are clean and modern (showers cost €1 for 3 min, but can stop and start the water!).
"A short bus ride north of Sassnitz is the Jasmund National Park visitor centre with lots of interesting information on the ancient beech forests that used to cover Europe, and the impressive Königstühl white chalk cliffs. The British decommissioned submarine HMS Opus in the harbour is also well worth a visit."
